Chris Martin and his band, Coldplay, will be performing on American Idol this week. The band will be singing their debut performance of their newest single, "Higher Power." There's much more to learn to about Chris Martin, even if you know Coldplay's music. As a 44-year-old singer, songwriter, producer, musician, and philanthropist originally from Exeter, England, Chris's personal life and solo work are just as interesting as his time with the famous band.

Chris formed the band Coldplay in 1996 with his college buddies, Johnny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion. They released their debut album in 2000, called Parachutes. The song "Yellow" became a huge hit, and lead to international recognition, as well as their first Grammy nomination. Since then, Coldplay has released seven other studio albums: A Rush of Blood to the Head, X&Y, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, Mylo Xyloto, Ghost Stories, A Head Full of Dreams, and Everyday Life. Their new single, "Higher Power," was released on May 7, 2021, indicating that a new album will be out soon.

Chris's personal life and other endeavors have made him a huge celebrity. In 2003, he married Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow. The couple welcomed a daughter, famously named Apple, in May 2004. They announced their separation, or "conscious uncoupling," in March 2014. Gwyneth officially filed for divorce in 2015, and it was finalized in 2016. Since then, Chris has had two other significant relationships. He dated actress Annabelle Wallis on and off from August 2015 to August 2017. He then started dating actress Dakota Johnson, whom he has been in a relationship with since late 2017 (via Us Weekly). The couple sparked engagement rumors in December 2020 when Dakota was spotted wearing a large, emerald ring. They announced in January 2021 that they bought a house together. Gwyneth, who is now married to producer Brad Falchuk, reportedly loves Dakota and is very happy she and Chris are together.

Chris has also frequently written songs for and collaborated with other high-profile artists. He has worked on tracks with Nelly Furtado, Jay-Z, and Kanye West. Chris loves hip-hop and ventures into the genre when he isn't doing work with Coldplay. He also contributed vocals to the song "Something Just Like This" by The Chainsmokers in 2016. The song peaked at number two in the UK, and number three in the US. He also wrote a song for pop star Dua Lipa called "Homecoming" for her debut album and is featured on Avicii's posthumous album, Tim. He wrote the song "Heaven" with Avicii and performs vocals on it.

Although he is still young, Chris has had an interesting and successful life. His talent is evident and only continues to grow his audience. Coldplay's performance on American Idol will help them reach new fans as they prepare for the release of their ninth studio album.
