Apple Offers Up to $400K to Keep iPhone Designers Amid AI Talent War

In a bid to secure its top talent, Apple has initiated the issuance of substantial, out-of-cycle bonuses to its iPhone Product Design team. This strategic move is reported by Bloomberg and comes as the tech giant faces fierce competition from well-funded startups like OpenAI that are aggressively poaching engineering talent.

According to the report, Apple has granted stock bonuses ranging from $200,000 to $400,000 to many of its hardware designers. These bonuses, structured as restricted stock units (RSUs), are designed to incentivize employees to remain with the company, as they vest over a four-year period. While these bonuses may appear lucrative, they are largely a defensive strategy in response to escalating offers from competitors.

Some companies are reportedly offering Apple engineers even more attractive packages, with annual stock options reaching as high as $1 million, depending on stock performance. This competitive landscape puts immense pressure on Apple to retain its top engineers, who are integral to the design of its most iconic products.

The Threat from OpenAI

Currently, OpenAI is viewed as the most significant threat to Apple’s talent pool. The AI leader is not only expanding its hardware division but is also strategically recruiting talents who have a history with Apple, including Tang Tan, a former head of Apple’s iPhone product design team. The collaboration with renowned former design chief Jony Ive to develop a new generation of AI-centric devices adds a personal competitive edge for Apple.

OpenAI's aggressive hiring strategy has successfully attracted several dozen employees from Apple who have contributed to various projects, including the iPad and Apple Watch. This trend has not gone unnoticed, prompting Apple to take measures to retain its workforce.

Emerging Competitors

Apple's leadership is also wary of new challengers in the tech landscape. Startups like Hark, launched by Brett Adcock of Figure AI, have begun to target Apple employees. Recently, Hark recruited industrial designer Abidur Chowdhury, who previously worked on the “iPhone Air,” along with other design engineers.

These emerging companies are not merely seeking to fill positions; they are developing hardware that could potentially challenge the iPhone's dominance in the market. As the industry shifts rapidly toward AI technologies, Apple finds itself in a precarious position, with engineers increasingly seeking new opportunities.

Bloomberg highlights that Apple has previously faced similar poaching threats. Three years ago, during another talent war, the company issued similar financial packages to safeguard its workforce. Last year, amid a competition for AI researchers, Apple raised salaries to counter offers from rival companies such as Meta, which reportedly extended offers exceeding $100 million.

As startups like OpenAI and Hark advance in building AI hardware that could replace the iPhone, Apple is proactively developing its own AI product pipeline. This includes innovations like smart glasses, camera-equipped AirPods, and a screenless Siri pendant equipped with computer vision capabilities.
