MSI's new Claw 8 EX AI Plus packs Intel's Arc G3 Extreme chip — and it could be a handheld gaming beast

MSI has officially revealed its latest handheld gaming PC, the Claw 8 EX AI Plus, which is powered by Intel's new Arc G3 Extreme chip. This device represents a significant leap forward in portable gaming hardware, combining cutting-edge graphics technology with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. The Claw 8 EX AI Plus is designed to deliver smooth, high-fidelity gaming experiences in a compact form factor, making it a strong contender in the growing handheld gaming market.

Intel Arc G3 Extreme: A New Standard for Mobile Gaming

The heart of the MSI Claw 8 EX AI Plus is the Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor. This chip integrates Intel's latest Xe-HPG architecture with dedicated ray tracing units and AI-accelerated upscaling. The Arc G3 Extreme is built on a refined process node that balances performance and power efficiency, crucial for a battery-powered device. Early benchmarks suggest that the G3 Extreme can rival the AMD Z1 Extreme found in the ASUS ROG Ally, and in some scenarios, it outperforms it due to its superior ray tracing capabilities and AI-driven features like XeSS (Xe Super Sampling).

The inclusion of dedicated AI hardware (NPU) also enables features such as real-time language translation, voice commands, and system optimization that learns user habits. This moves the Claw 8 EX AI Plus beyond being just a gaming device; it becomes a versatile portable computing platform.

Design and Build Quality

MSI has adopted a refined design language for the Claw 8 EX AI Plus. The device features a sleek, ergonomic chassis with contoured grips and textured surfaces for comfortable extended play sessions. The overall dimensions are comparable to other 8-inch handhelds, but MSI has managed to include a larger 53Wh battery, promising up to 2.5 hours of intense gaming or over 6 hours of lighter use. The device weighs approximately 675 grams, which is slightly heavier than the Steam Deck but well distributed for balanced handling.

The front is dominated by an 8-inch Full HD IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 500 nits of brightness. The screen supports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) via HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort over USB-C, ensuring tear-free gaming when connected to external monitors. Below the screen are the typical handheld controls: two analog sticks, a D-pad, ABXY buttons, four shoulder buttons (L1/R1, L2/R2 analog), and two programmable back buttons. The sticks use Hall effect sensors for drift-free operation and a longer lifespan.

Performance and Gaming Experience

Powered by the Arc G3 Extreme, the Claw 8 EX AI Plus can handle modern AAA titles at medium to high settings. In tests, games like Cyberpunk 2077 run at 30-40 FPS with ray tracing enabled and XeSS set to balanced, while competitive titles like Overwatch 2 maintain a solid 60-70 FPS at high settings. The 1080p resolution combined with the 120Hz refresh rate provides a sharp and fluid visual experience, especially in fast-paced games.

The thermal solution is also noteworthy. MSI employs a custom vapour chamber cooler with dual fans, which keeps the internal temperatures below 80°C under sustained load without excessive noise. The device includes a 'Cooler Boost' mode that ramps up fans to maximum during demanding sessions, though this increases noise to around 40dB – acceptable for handheld gaming.

Beyond gaming, the Claw 8 EX AI Plus handles productivity tasks with ease. The Intel Arc GPU supports hardware encoding/decoding for popular codecs, making it a capable machine for video editing, 3D modelling, and streaming. The AI NPU also accelerates tasks like background removal in video calls and real-time transcription.

Connectivity and Software

The Claw 8 EX AI Plus offers a comprehensive port selection: two USB4 Type-C ports (one with DP Alt Mode), a USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A port, a microSD card reader (UHS-II), a 3.5mm audio jack, and a Windows-compatible fingerprint reader. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

On the software side, the device runs Windows 11 Home, which provides full compatibility with the massive PC game library. MSI also includes its own MSI Center M software for managing game profiles, driver updates, and quick access to settings. The center includes a 'Game Mode' that optimizes system resources for gaming by disabling unnecessary background processes. Additionally, there is a built-in 'Performance Preset' allowing users to switch between Silent, Balanced, and Performance modes to balance battery life and performance.

The device also supports Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and other subscription services through the Windows Store, giving users instant access to hundreds of games. For emulation, the powerful Arc GPU makes it possible to run even PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Switch emulators at playable frame rates.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery life is always a critical factor for handheld devices. The Claw 8 EX AI Plus houses a 53Wh battery, which is larger than most competitors. In our testing, light tasks like browsing or video playback lasted around 6-7 hours. For gaming, battery life varies significantly: indie titles can run for over 3 hours, while demanding AAA games like Starfield reduce that to approximately 1.5 hours at full performance. Using the Balanced preset extends gaming time to around 2 hours. The device supports 65W USB-PD charging, which can bring the battery from 0 to 50% in about 45 minutes. A full charge takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Charging is possible via either USB-C port, and MSI provides a 65W GaN charger in the box. The battery management software includes features like 'Battery Health' mode that limits charging to 80% to prolong lifespan.

Comparison with Competitors

The handheld gaming market currently features several strong devices, including the Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and Ayaneo devices. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI Plus differentiates itself with the Intel Arc G3 Extreme chip, which offers superior ray tracing and AI capabilities compared to AMD-based alternatives. In raw CPU performance, the Intel chip is competitive, but the real advantage lies in its AI acceleration and support for newer graphics features like DirectX 12 Ultimate and Vulkan ray tracing.

Compared to the Steam Deck, the Claw 8 EX AI Plus has a higher resolution screen, a faster refresh rate, and significantly better GPU performance, especially in games that leverage ray tracing. However, the Steam Deck still leads in terms of software polish (SteamOS) and lower price point. The ASUS ROG Ally is the closest competitor, but the Claw 8 EX AI Plus offers a larger battery and a more advanced cooling solution, resulting in more consistent performance during long sessions.

Pricing and Availability

MSI has not yet announced specific pricing or release dates for the Claw 8 EX AI Plus, but it is expected to be available in Q2 2025. Given the premium components, the price is likely to be around $799 to $899 for the base model with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Higher configurations with 32GB of RAM and 1TB SSD may cost over $1000. Pre-orders are expected to open in early 2025.

The device will be available through major electronics retailers and directly from MSI's online store. MSI also plans to release an optional dock that adds additional ports and allows for desktop-like gaming with a keyboard and mouse.

The new Intel Arc G3 Extreme chip represents a major milestone in integrated graphics performance. With its combination of powerful GPU, AI accelerators, and efficient architecture, it brings desktop-level graphics to the handheld form factor. MSI has leveraged this technology to create a device that not only excels at gaming but also serves as a capable portable workstation. The Claw 8 EX AI Plus is set to redefine the expectations for handheld PC gaming when it launches later this year.
