iOS 27 might convince a lot of people to upgrade to a new iPhone

iOS 27 is set to be unveiled in just over a week, and rumors are building that this year’s software update will have a much stronger pull on iPhone upgraders than usual. The headline feature driving this shift is Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of AI capabilities that launched in 2024 but has remained relatively niche in its appeal. With iOS 27, however, Apple is reportedly doubling down on AI, integrating it deeply into core system functions, most notably Siri. This could finally give users a compelling reason to buy a new iPhone, even if their current device is only a year or two old.

Compatibility won’t tell the whole story

Every year, Apple releases a major iOS version alongside new iPhones, creating a marketing synergy where the software’s new features highlight the hardware’s capabilities. Historically, Apple has been generous with software support, often updating devices five or six years old. iOS 26, for example, ran on iPhones released as far back as 2020. For iOS 27, rumors suggest that four older iPhone models will be dropped from the compatibility list. But the real upgrade driver isn’t those dropped devices—it’s the hardware requirement for Apple Intelligence.

Apple Intelligence launched with strict hardware limitations: only the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, as well as all iPhone 16 models, support the full suite of AI features. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, along with every model before the 15 Pro, are excluded. This means that even though iOS 27 will likely be compatible with the iPhone 12 and newer, anyone using an iPhone 12, 13, 14, or even the base iPhone 15 will miss out on the most transformative features of the update. This is a departure from previous years, where almost all supported devices received identical functionality, save for a few hardware-dependent capabilities like LiDAR or the Dynamic Island.

The AI focus of iOS 27

According to multiple leaks, iOS 27 is being positioned as an “AI-first” operating system. The biggest change is the new Siri, which is reportedly built on a Gemini-inspired large language model. This new Siri will feature a chatbot interface, a dedicated app, onscreen and personal context awareness, and significantly more natural conversation abilities. All signs indicate that if your iPhone doesn’t support Apple Intelligence, you’ll be stuck with the old Siri—a version that many users find limited compared to competitors like ChatGPT, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa.

But Siri is just the tip of the iceberg. Rumored features include AI-powered enhancements to the Photos app, such as intelligent editing and album suggestions; custom wallpaper generation based on user preferences; automatic subtitles for all videos; natural language creation of Shortcuts; a new Siri mode in the Camera app that can identify objects and provide information; and Safari improvements like smarter tab organization and content summarization. All of these features require the Neural Engine and hardware acceleration found only in Apple Intelligence–compatible iPhones.

For users who have held onto their iPhone 12 or 13, these additions might feel like a breakthrough. The current Siri has been criticized for lacking the conversational fluidity and contextual understanding of modern AI assistants. With iOS 27, Apple aims to close that gap, and early beta testers report that the new Siri can handle multi-step requests, remember previous interactions, and even draft emails or messages in a natural tone. This alone could be enough to convince long-time iPhone owners to upgrade, especially those who rely on voice assistants for productivity.

Historical context and market impact

Apple’s approach to AI has been more cautious than that of Google or Microsoft. The company introduced Apple Intelligence in 2024 as a limited set of features: notification summaries, image generation, and basic writing tools. While useful, these features did not fundamentally change how users interacted with their iPhones. In contrast, iOS 27’s Siri overhaul is being compared to the debut of the original iPhone in 2007 or the App Store in 2008—a paradigm shift that could redefine user expectations.

The timing is also critical. The smartphone market has matured, and upgrade cycles have lengthened. Many users are holding onto their iPhones for three, four, or even five years. Apple’s hardware revenue has increasingly depended on services and accessory sales. By making iOS 27’s best features exclusive to newer devices, Apple may be trying to stimulate a “super cycle” of upgrades, similar to what happened with the iPhone 6 in 2014 and the iPhone 12 in 2020 (which introduced 5G).

Furthermore, competitors are already offering AI-first experiences. Google’s Pixel lineup has long integrated AI into the camera, assistant, and operating system. Samsung’s Galaxy AI, launched in 2024, provides real-time translation, photo editing, and summarization. Apple’s delayed entry into this space means that iOS 27 needs to be not just good, but exceptional, to catch up. Early indications suggest it might be, but only for those with the right hardware.

For users who already own an iPhone 15 Pro or 16 series, the transition will be seamless—they will get the full iOS 27 experience. But for the millions on iPhone 12 through 15 non-Pro, the decision to upgrade is more complicated. They will still receive security updates and basic new features, but the AI magic will be out of reach. This creates a stark divide in the user experience, one that Apple has rarely enforced with such rigor in the past.

Best iPhone accessories to complement the new features

While upgrading to a new iPhone is a big decision, there are also accessories that can enhance the experience for those who do take the plunge. The MagSafe Car Mount remains a popular choice for hands-free navigation, especially when using the new Siri for directions. The 10-year AirTag battery case ensures that users never have to worry about losing track of their belongings. For audiophiles, AirPods Pro 3 offer seamless integration with Apple’s ecosystem and spatial audio. The AirTag 2, available in single or four-pack, provides precise location tracking. Finally, a 100W USB-C fast charging power adapter ensures that the new iPhone’s battery is topped up quickly, especially when using power-intensive AI features like on-device machine learning.

As Apple prepares to unveil iOS 27 at its annual developer conference, the question on many users’ minds is whether the AI features will finally justify a hardware upgrade. With the new Siri, AI-powered apps, and exclusive capabilities only available on the latest iPhones, the answer for many may be yes. The days of holding onto an iPhone for four or five years without missing out on core functionality may be coming to an end. iOS 27 represents a clear pivot toward a future where the smartphone is not just a communication device but an intelligent assistant that learns and adapts—but only if you have the hardware to run it.
