White House science officials say the Trump administration’s politicization of science put lives at risk and eroded public trust. They hope to unearth and learn from past problems and tighten scientific integrity rules for the future.

JOE BIDEN: Good afternoon, folks. I've always said that the Biden-Harris administration will also now lead, and we're going to lead with science and truth. We believe in both.

KAMALA HARRIS: That's right.

JANE LUBCHENCO: We are examining, um, what worked and what didn't work so that we can abstract the lessons learned from that and have in place policies that are likely to deliver on what is laid out in the presidential memorandum. In short, we want people to be able to trust what the Federal government is telling them, whether it's a weather forecast or information about vaccine safety, or whatever.

This task force and the new presidential memorandum from President Biden is so timely because, uh, it gives us an opportunity to look at what we had, uh, what worked and what didn't work, and what needs to be improved so that we can strengthen the ability of people to trust what the government is telling them that is based on scientific information and evidence.

JOE BIDEN: As a presidential science advisor and director of the Office of Science.
