Extreme moves toward autonomous networking with advanced AI agent, management tools

Extreme Networks is making a substantial push toward autonomous networking with the unveiling of its second-generation AI agent, a major upgrade to its cloud management platform, and three new Wi-Fi 7 access points. The announcements, made at the Extreme Connect 2026 conference, underscore the company's strategy to use artificial intelligence to manage increasingly complex, distributed networks at machine speed.

The centerpiece of the news is Extreme Agent One, a proactive AI agent designed to continuously monitor network activity, identify anomalies, and autonomously execute remediation steps. Unlike passive AI assistants that wait for user prompts, Agent One takes the initiative: it investigates alerts before notifying IT staff, delivering findings rather than raw alarms. Nabil Bukhari, Extreme's CTO and president of AI platforms, described the agent as a "coworker" that nudges teams with actionable insights, prioritizing urgency based on the situation.

Agent One is available in two tiers. The first, known as Agent One Coworker, provides real-time decisioning and automated execution within defined governance boundaries. A second release, Agent One Operator, scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, will add fully autonomous operations, allowing the agent to run scheduled workflows without human input and continuously learn from outcomes. The company aims to reduce resolution times and prevent issues before they impact users, addressing a critical need as network complexity outpaces the availability of skilled engineers.

Industry analysts have noted the significance of this shift. Ron Westfall of Hyperframe Research described Agent One as moving networking "beyond simple AI assistance toward true infrastructure autonomy." He highlighted the Nudge capability as a psychological pivot, transforming the AI from a passive database into a proactive coworker that identifies invisible problems, such as retail point-of-sale lag, before they cause failures.

On the management front, Extreme introduced a new version of Platform ONE, its cloud-based platform that integrates wireless, wired, and security data with AI and analytics. A key addition is third-party device management, allowing customers to discover, monitor, and perform basic management of network components from Cisco, HPE, Juniper, and others. While this feature simplifies multivendor environments, Extreme positions it as a transitional tool to help customers migrate away from legacy vendors. The platform also now includes built-in Cloud PKI capabilities for identity-based zero-trust security, a Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS), real-time asset and visitor tracking with floor-level location resolution, and flexible Wi-Fi guest access with engagement analytics.

The Wi-Fi 7 portfolio expansion addresses high-density outdoor environments with the AP5060 series, featuring a quad-radio design with 4×4:4 MIMO across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz, plus a dedicated tri-band sensor. It delivers aggregate data rates up to 23 Gbps and is housed in an IP67 weatherized enclosure rated for temperatures from -40°F to 140°F. For indoor and outdoor spaces with space or power constraints, the AP3020 and AP3060 series offer dual-radio 2×2 configurations suited for schools, retail, and hospitality. The growing importance of Wi-Fi 7 is reflected in Extreme's financial results: during the recent quarter, Wi-Fi 7 represented 37% of total wireless unit shipments, up from 27% the prior quarter, and nearly half of wireless bookings dollars. CEO Ed Meyercord noted that Wi-Fi 7 is the first generation of Wi-Fi capable of running mission-critical business applications reliably.

The broader context of these announcements is the industry's race toward autonomous networking. Major vendors including Cisco, HPE (Aruba), and Juniper (now part of HPE) are all investing heavily in AI-driven operations. Extreme's approach emphasizes proactive, context-aware agents that operate within clear governance boundaries to maintain trust between humans and machines. By combining AI agents, a unified management platform with multivendor support, and next-generation wireless hardware, Extreme aims to deliver a comprehensive solution for enterprises seeking to reduce manual effort and accelerate network response times. The company's focus on Wi-Fi 7 also positions it to capture growing demand for high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity in applications ranging from education to healthcare to retail. With the first release of Agent One available in Q3 2026 and the autonomous operator version following in Q4, Extreme is charting a clear path toward networks that think, adapt, and act in real time.
