In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) can convincingly mimic human-created content, the skepticism surrounding the authenticity of online works has surged. The phrase “This looks like AI” has become a dreaded comment for many creators, including writers and artists, as generative AI technology continues to evolve.

Many human creators are advocating for an ‘AI-free’ label akin to a Fair Trade logo, aiming to distinguish their original work from that generated by machines. The concern is that while AI technologies are often not motivated to disclose their origins, human artists who face potential displacement due to AI-generated content are eager to assert their authenticity.

Recent discussions, including insights from Instagram head Adam Mosseri, highlight the urgency of developing reliable methods to authenticate human-created media. Mosseri noted that with the advancement of AI, it may soon be more feasible to fingerprint genuine media rather than identify fakes.

A recent survey by the Reuters Institute revealed widespread belief that many online platforms are saturated with AI-generated content, leading to a demand for clearer distinctions between human-made and AI-produced works.

The C2PA content credentials standard, which aims to authenticate human-made content, has struggled with effective implementation despite enjoying broad industry support. The challenge lies in the fact that many creators and platforms producing AI content may have motivations to obscure its origins, driven by the clicks and revenue such content can generate.

In response to the need for differentiation, numerous solutions have emerged over the years. However, like the C2PA, these initiatives face challenges in gaining widespread acceptance. Currently, there are at least 12 different AI-free labeling alternatives, each with varying criteria and approaches to verification. Some labels, such as the Authors Guild’s “human authored certification,” are industry-specific, limiting their applicability.

Broader initiatives like Proudly Human and Not by AI aim to encompass various creative forms, including text, visual art, and music. However, their verification processes are often questioned, with some relying solely on trust and others employing unreliable AI detection services.

Many verifying services require creators to submit their working processes, such as drafts and sketches, for manual inspection by auditors—a labor-intensive but currently reliable method for establishing authenticity.

Another significant hurdle is defining what constitutes “human-made” content. As AI tools become more integrated into creative processes, determining the line between human and machine involvement becomes increasingly complex.

Jonathan Stray, a senior scientist at UC Berkeley, pointed out the difficulties in verification: “Does chatting with an LLM about the idea before executing it manually count as using AI? And how could the creator prove no AI was involved?” This ambiguity calls for a re-evaluation of existing definitions of authorship.

Nina Beguš, a lecturer at UC Berkeley, emphasized that we are entering an era of hybrid content, complicating traditional notions of creativity. “Any creative output today can be touched by AI in one way or another without us being able to prove it,” she stated.

To address these concerns, the label Not by AI has introduced badges for creators to apply to various works, provided that at least 90 percent of the content is human-created. However, this voluntary system lacks robust verification.

Blockchain technology emerges as a potential solution, with initiatives like Proof I Did It aiming to provide a permanent, verifiable record of creators and their works. By storing verification on the blockchain, creators can receive unforgeable certificates proving their work's human origin.

Thomas Beyer from UC San Diego advocates for this approach, suggesting it could shift the focus from whether something looks AI-generated to whether the creator can prove their human history. This method could lead to a “premium tier” of art where authenticity is guaranteed.

Despite the challenges, established standards like C2PA are essential for unifying AI-free labeling efforts. Major tech companies, including Adobe and Google, have committed to these standards, which aim to meet regulatory expectations.

Creative professionals are motivated to distinguish their work from AI-generated content, especially as the latter increasingly threatens their livelihoods. This urgency is evident in various industries, from literature to digital art, where the line between human creativity and AI output is becoming harder to discern.

The reluctance of some creators to disclose the use of AI tools, driven by fears of stigma and potential financial loss, further complicates the landscape. For instance, a romance author recently revealed that she generated over 200 AI novels without labeling them, fearing the repercussions of transparency.

As the landscape of creative work continues to evolve, the demand for a universally recognized and enforced solution grows. The challenge remains to establish a unified standard that can ensure the authenticity of human-made content amidst the rapid advancements in AI technologies.
